The need for composite items

Like every feature that we build for you, the composite items feature can be used for many different scenarios. Let’s take a look at a few common scenarios of use.

Build kits & sell items as a bundle

Treeka runs a huge confectionery. During festive seasons, she often puts together select items like assorted chocolates, aroma candles and cakes as a package and sells them as a bundle of joy at attractive prices.

Her bundles of joy became the talk of the town and soon there was a lot of demand for them.

She and her team got busy, crafting the items and bundling them together. While selling them together, she also wanted to find out the stock flow of the individual items so that she can monitor and plan for restocking her inventory by baking or placing orders from her fellow bakers.

Using the Composite Items feature in Zoho Inventory, she was able to create kits/bundles, box them together due to which the stock of the joy bundle increases while the stock of the associated items decrease and if required unbox them to get back the items.

Buy kits and sell the items individually

Edward runs a stationary store. To get a better bargain out of his purchases, he always buys them as kits, then unboxes these kits and sells them individually at a higher price. Doing this, he makes more money from all these items by selling them individually compared to what he will make by reselling them as a kit or a bundle.

To manage his workflow, he creates a Composite Item in Zoho Inventory by associating all the items that will be inside that kit(composite item). Instead of boxing the associated items, he creates a purchase order for the required quantity of this kit(composite item) and places the order to his preferred vendor(by emailing it). As soon as his vendor supplies the kits(composite items) to his store, he records a purchase receive and a bill for the purchase order due to which, the stock level of the kit/composite item goes up.

After physically opening up the kits and storing all the items on their respective shelves, he opens his Zoho Inventory account, then navigates to the Composite Items module, selects the preferred composite item, clicks on the Box/Unbox button and opts to Unbox the composite item. He enters the quantity to be unboxed and then saves his choice. Now the stock level of the composite item drops by the unbox quantity specified by him while the stock of all its associated items increase accordingly.

He can now sell all his items individually and make a higher margin.

Represent simple assemblies

Ethan is a hobbyist, he builds toys from parts and sells them as a whole. As they are mostly composed of the little parts and are simple to build, he defines a composite item and boxes them together. He also does them same when he stitches the eyes and details onto the furry dolls sells them to his customers as there is no BOM involved.

This way he knows how much associated items need to be ordered and how to control the stock flow of the complete item.

Management of Composite Items

Creating composite items

Important note to dummies: By creating a composite item, you are only defining the composite item. If you have not added any opening stock, the creation process will not have any effect on the stock level of the composite item. To increase the stock level of a composite item, follow one of the 3 ways - boxing the associated items, adjusting the stock of the composite item or purchasing the composite item.

To create a composite item:
