Meet Spotlight forms: Highlight one field at a time

There's a quiet frustration that happens when someone opens a long form. They see the whole thing at once, every field, every section, scrolling endlessly below the fold, and something in their brain quietly decides: maybe later. Most of the time, later never comes.
Form abandonment is rarely about the questions being too hard. It's about the experience feeling like too much. And until now, form builders have largely offered two answers to that problem: show everything at once, or break it into pages. Zoho Forms is introducing a third option — and it works differently from either.
We're calling it Spotlight forms.
What is a Spotlight form?
A Spotlight Form displays all fields on a single scrollable page, but only one field is in focus at a time. As respondents scroll, each field moves into an active state, i.e. visually highlighted and centered, while the surrounding fields are dimmed. The focus shifts automatically based on scroll position.
That's the whole idea, and it's deceptively simple. The form isn't hiding questions from the respondent. Every field is there, on one page. But only the one they need to answer right now is fully visible and interactive. Everything else steps back.
The result is a form that feels less like a never ending grocery list and more like a conversation.

How is it different from Standard and Card forms?
Zoho Forms now offers three distinct form types, each designed for a different kind of experience. Here's how they compare:
| Standard form | Card form | Spotlight form | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Field display | All fields visible at once | One field per page | One field in focus at a time |
| Page structure | Single or multiple pages | Multiple pages | Single page |
| Navigation | Scroll or button | Next/Previous buttons | Scroll to focus |
| Welcome page | No | Yes | No |
| Best suited for | Detailed, data-heavy forms | Step-by-step guided forms | Distraction-free interactions |
Standard forms are the workhorse: great for internal forms, detailed data collection, and situations where respondents need to see everything at once.
Card forms guide respondents through one question per page, which works well for shorter, more deliberate journeys like registrations or multi-step client feedback inputs.
Spotlight forms sit in their own category: they keep all questions on one page, but the scroll-to-focus experience removes the visual noise that makes long forms feel overwhelming.
The problem Spotlight forms are designed to solve
Think about the last time you handed someone a clipboard with a multi-page paper form. They flick to the end first, gauge how long it is, then decide whether it's worth their time. Digital forms do the same thing, and when respondents see a wall of fields, completion rates reflect it.
Spotlight Forms keep all fields on a single page with no next page or navigation events, while automatically focusing on one field at a time as the respondent scrolls. So respondents get the continuity and scrollability of a Standard form, with the focus and clarity of a Card form. They can scroll back up to a previous answer without hitting a Back button. They always know roughly where they are in the form. And at no point are they staring at fifteen fields competing for their attention.
With just a small UX shift, we believe we've now introduced a solution that can make a measurable difference in whether people actually finish and press that elusive Submit button.
The Spotlight form is the perfect form type for the attention economy.
