IPL 2024 dashboard powered by Zoho Analytics: Access and assess cricket stats like never before

The IPL is considered one of the most valuable sporting events in the world, generating billions of dollars in revenue each year.

Recognizing the popularity of the IPL, Zoho Analytics is proud to present its comprehensive stats dashboard for the 2024 IPL tournament. This dashboard offers cricket fans an in-depth and insightful view of the tournament's statistics and team/player performances.

The 2024 edition of the Zoho Analytics IPL dashboard features several new and engaging elements.

  • New visualizations: To enhance your experience, the dashboard now includes three new visualization types — a tree map, a Sankey chart, and a racing bar chart.
  • Fantasy cricket game: The dashboard now features a fantasy cricket game where cricket fans can create a team of 11 players and earn points based on their performance. You can also predict the toss winner, innings score, and match winner.
  • Playoff predictor: The dashboard offers a playoff predictor, where you can select the teams you believe will win the remaining league matches and see which teams make it to the playoffs.

First, let's check out the tree map that provides insights into the performance of bowlers across the tournament.

This tree map visualization allows you to:

  • Identify and understand each team's total wickets taken, as well as the individual contribution of their bowlers.
  • Easily differentiate between the teams using the color-coding based on their jerseys.
  • Gain insights into the number of bowlers who have contributed to each team's wicket tally, as indicated by the area covered in the tree map.

Here's the interactive tree map that lets you quickly analyze and compare the wicket-taking abilities of the different teams and their bowlers.

The next visualization is the Sankey chart.

The Sankey chart provides a detailed breakdown of the runs scored by each team, showing the split between runs scored from fours, sixes, and singles and doubles.

With this visualization, you can:

  • Clearly see the distribution of runs scored by each team, categorized into fours, sixes, and singles and doubles.
  • Identify the total runs scored by each team and the proportional breakdown of their scoring.

The interactive Sankey chart below showcases the run-scoring split for the teams:

In addition to the tree map and Sankey chart visualizations, the dashboard includes scattered charts that provide a clear understanding of the teams' batting and bowling performance.

For the batting performance analysis, the report plots each team's strike rate and batting average across all matches.

The teams in the top-right quadrant of the scatter plot chart are considered the top-performing batters, as they showcase an excellent combination of high strike rate and batting average.

The report includes a slider that allows you to view the individual match data or selected cumulative matches to explore the batting performance further.

Similarly, we have a scattered chart that plots the economy rate and bowling average of the teams.

In this case, the teams located in the bottom-left quadrant are identified as the top-performing bowlers as they demonstrate outstanding economy and bowling average.

As in the batting performance report, you can use the slider to analyze the individual match data or a selected set of matches for the bowling performance.

These scattered charts provide a comprehensive and intuitive way to assess the overall batting and bowling prowess of the teams throughout the tournament.

In addition to these visualizations, the dashboard features a racing bar chart with an overview of the match wins for each team over the last 17 years of the IPL tournament.

The dashboard offers a comprehensive set of visualizations, comprising more than 40 charts and 25 KPI widgets. You are encouraged to check the dashboard regularly, as the data is updated daily after the completion of each match.

The dashboard is organized into seven tabs, each containing a different set of reports and widgets. Within the dashboard, you can also access the fantasy cricket game and the playoff predictor, powered by Zoho Creator.

You can also access our previous IPL, SA20, and World Cup analytics dashboards if you're interested in exploring them.

Now that you've gone through our IPL dashboard, you may be curious to learn about the process behind its creation. Here are the steps we followed to build this comprehensive dashboard.

Steps followed to create the IPL dashboard

The key steps involved in creating the IPL dashboard are as follows:

  1. Connect data
  2. Prepare data and make it analysis-ready
  3. Visualize data
  4. Build the dashboard
  5. Publish the dashboard

1. Identify data sources and import data

To build the IPL dashboard, we relied on publicly available data from reputable sports websites that provide regular updates on the tournament.

To efficiently import data from these sources, we used Zoho DataPrep, an AI-powered data preparation tool that seamlessly integrates data from various sources.

The data import process was also automated, with scheduled updates to ensure the dashboard remains current with the latest tournament data without the need for manual intervention.

2. Prepare data and make it analysis-ready

Importing data from public sources can often present challenges due to inconsistent formats. However, we leveraged Zoho DataPrep to streamline this process.

To understand the complete data preparation workflow better, please refer to the video demo below.

After importing the data, we brought it inside Zoho Analytics and consolidated it into a single query table, as showcased in the video tutorial below.

3. Visualize data

Followed by data preparation, we proceeded to transform the raw data into meaningful data visualizations using Zoho Analytics.

The process of creating these visualizations was simple with the intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

This video demonstrates how we brought the data to life with various chart types and visual elements.

4. Build the dashboard

With the individual reports and visualizations in place, we then organized them into distinct tabs for the dashboard. This involved creating a list of KPI widgets for each tab and then adding them to the dashboard using the intuitive drag-and-drop functionality.

5. Publish the dashboard

With the dashboard fully built and ready, we were eager to share it with the public. Zoho Analytics offers several options for publishing the dashboard, including a shareable link, dedicated portal, and embed code.

We opted to use the shareable link. We made all the reports and charts public, copied the dashboard's link, and added it to the Zoho Sites portal.

That concludes the overview of the steps involved in creating the IPL 2024 dashboard using Zoho Analytics.
