Zoho Writer : Having RTL and LTR languages in the same document

A user from the Middle East asked us recently how to have Arabic/Hebrew text in a Zoho Writer document. She also went on to explain that the document (which is pre-dominantly RTL) will also contain some English text. Let's see how this can be done in Zoho Writer as illustrated in the below example.

1. For setting the language direction of the document, click on the Page Setup link. In this example, let us set this as 'Right to Left' and hit Save. You will notice that the cursor shifts to the right end of the line and you should be able to start writing in Arabic/Hebrew.

2. Now to have some English text inbetween, click on the Toggle HTML Source button which is third from right in the second row of the Zoho Writer toolbar. Introduce a paragraph tag <p> and in it mention dir="ltr". Click on the Save button and you should notice that this overrides the document level RTL setting and the cursor going to the left of the line again. Add your English text now.

Hope that helps. You can also try dir="ltr" or dir="rtl" parameters inside other HTML tags like span, table etc.

  1. Zoho User & Elchanan : Thanks for your comments. Yes, this is a hack for all those Zoho users who wondered how to do it. We'll make this easier by providing LTR/RTL buttons.

  3. It's great to have rtl/ltr capabilities in Zoho. It would even be better if this capability will be integrated in other applications such as spreadsheets, emails and tasks. The correct implementation would be to have a rtl/ltr button in the toolbar just like Google has.
