How emojis have redefined business communications

A couple of years ago, emojis were almost exclusively used by teenagers. Today, people of all ages use emojis to add some levity to their written communication. With 92% of the online population using emojis, it's no surprise that businesses have started to use them in their marketing. Emojis have helped them to add a human, playful touch in their communications.

This tweet from Aaron Levie, CEO of Box perfectly captures the mindset on how businesses should be using emojis, maybe. :)

Here are some interesting stats from a recently concluded study about the frequency of the use of the "smiley" emoji across a range of age groups.

The beauty of emojis lies in the fact how they can be used across communication platforms like email, chat and social media. Here are a few brands that have successfully used emojis to redefine and add an interesting dimension to their business communication.

1) Chevy goes emoji

A+ to chevy for the nice little rhyme in their hashtag. Words were not enough for Chevy to express their new car so they opted for emojis and only later followed up with the decoded version of the PR.


2) PepsiMoji: Live for now

Pepsi took a fresh take on the cultural phenomenon of emojis. The 'PepsiMoji' campaign nailed it by candidly capturing street photos and replacing people's faces with emojis. They took it to the next level by placing emojis on over 1 billion bottles and cans in 100 markets spread across the world.


3) Dominos: Tweet-a-Pizza emoji

Domino's generated a lot of buzz on social media and among pizza eaters, when it announced the introduction of ordering pizza through their twitter handle by simply tweeting a Pizza emoji.

These emojis keep communication light hearted and make collaboration even more interesting.

  1. Umm ... am I being dumb … or do these emojis only exist in 'new' Zoho Mail? Because I always felt the 16 emojis in Zoho Mail to be somewhat limited! So if there's a way to use more emojis in 'classic' Zoho Mail, please tell me how! (Sorry, I've tried the 'new' Mail but I can only see half as many e-mails per page, so I'm afriad I'm not a fan.)

    1. @Cad, We are in the process of providing all the emojis in the new Zoho Mail also. However, we do not have plans to support this in the older version of Zoho Mail. In case you haven't noticed, we have provided a 'Compact' view in new Zoho Mail based on feedback from users like you.       1. The short answer is that so-called "Compact" view isn't compact at all. It still shows each mail on TWO lines instead of ONE line (WRONG!!!) and the font is still MASSIVE. Maybe that works for phone people but I don't own a smartphone and don't plan to. For me, "Compact" is useless unless the sender and subject are on the SAME line, and also that I can turn the font size down to 9pt or 10pt instead of kindergarten size font. So, I'm sticking the 'old' version because I can see 25+ mails on the same page. PS: The new Settings page (also because of its MASSIVE font), has lots of options I literally can't see because the screen isn't wide enough, and there's no horizontal scroll bar to let me view the off-screen part of the line. Doesn't Zoho bother testing layouts on PC browsers in NON-maximised windows on real PCs any more? Because if you do, it sure doesn't look like that from here!
