Transforming accounting: The journey of chartered accountants embracing technology

The accounting profession has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with technology at its forefront. In the latest #CoffeeWithCA episode, three innovative chartered accountants—CA Dinesh Kumar Tejwani, CA Maitri Chheda, and CA Uday Shah—shared their unique journeys of integrating technology into their accounting practices.

This blog explores their insights, challenges, and visions for the future of accounting in a digital world. Be sure to watch the full video to see these remarkable stories unfold!

Welcoming change: A shift in perspective

Traditionally, technology and accounting were seen as separate entities. However, the advent of digitization has dramatically changed the landscape. CA Dinesh Kumar Tejwani shared how his journey began with a interest for computers, which ultimately led him to embrace both fields.

“I fell in love with computers and continued my journey as a chartered accountant,” he remarked.

This sentiment resonated throughout the discussion, emphasizing that merging technology with traditional accounting practices is not just beneficial but essential for success.

The role of technology in accounting

CA Maitri Chheda highlighted the transformative power of computerized accounting systems in enhancing business growth.

She noted, “We implemented computerized accounting ourselves, which significantly improved our services.”

Her story demonstrates how technology not only streamlines processes but also elevates the value accountants provide to their clients.

CA Uday Shah recounted a pivotal experience working on a large digitization project early in his career, sparking his deep interest in technology.

“I was tasked with digitizing an inventory system, which required interaction with various IT companies, leading to my fascination with technology,” he shared.

His journey illustrates the boundless opportunities that arise when accountants embrace technology.

Overcoming challenges: Resistance and acceptance

Despite the excitement surrounding digital transformation, the transition has not been without challenges. Shah shared anecdotes illustrating the initial resistance from government authorities to accept computerized records.

“When I presented a computerized cash book to an income tax officer, he refused to accept it, insisting on a bound, page-numbered version,” he recalled.

However, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Today, the government actively drives digitization, with e-filing and digital tax payments becoming the norm.

“The change is remarkable; now, the government mandates digital solutions,” Shah noted.

Learning and adapting: The importance of coding

Each of them emphasized the critical role of coding in their careers. Tejwani began learning Clipper, while Chheda started with COBOL programming. Shah’s journey included mastering C++ and Visual Basic.

“Learning coding has allowed me to integrate technology effectively into my accounting practice,” Tejwani explained, underscoring the importance of technical skills in modern accounting.

As Chheda put it, “Being tech-savvy in the CA world helps build trust with clients.”

This sentiment is crucial as the industry increasingly demands accountants who can navigate technological advancements.

Future perspectives: The role of AI and crypto accounting

As technology continues to evolve, so does the role of chartered accountants. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is set to redefine the profession.

Tejwani stated, “AI will act as a co-pilot, assisting chartered accountants in routine tasks, allowing us to focus on more strategic aspects of our work.”

This shift underscores the importance of adaptability in the profession.

Furthermore, the emergence of cryptocurrency has introduced new challenges and opportunities.

Shah highlighted the complexities involved in crypto accounting, stating, “Understanding the repository of transactions across different exchanges is crucial for accurate reporting. We’ve come a long way, reducing our processing time from six months to just three days.”

Looking ahead: The future of accounting

The conversation concluded with invaluable advice for aspiring chartered accountants. The trio emphasized the importance of staying adaptable and open to new technologies.

“Don’t argue for your limitations; embrace the changes in technology and seek opportunities to learn,” Tejwani advised.

Chheda echoed this sentiment, suggesting that future accountants focus on becoming advisors rather than mere processors of information.

“You need to bring value to the table by leveraging technology to derive insights for your clients,” she concluded, highlighting the evolving role of accountants in the digital age.

Final thoughts

The journeys of CA Tejwani, CA Chheda, and CA Shah exemplify the successful integration of technology in accounting. Their experiences are a testament to the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in this rapidly evolving profession.

As they navigate challenges and embrace new opportunities, these CAs are not just keeping pace with change; they are leading the way for the future of accounting.
