Introducing advanced electronic signatures (AES) in Zoho Sign for South Africa

The adoption of electronic signatures, also called e-signatures, has sped up day-to-day business operations worldwide. E-signatures allow companies to sign, send, and manage documents online from anywhere in a manner that is legally valid.

Each country has its own compliance requirements for electronic signatures. For example, a business document must be signed with an advanced electronic signature (AES) in South Africa to be considered legally equivalent to signing with pen and paper.

What is an AES?
An AES is an electronic signature that offers the highest level of compliance in accordance with the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECT Act). It involves face-to-face identity verification of signers before the digital signature certificate is issued by a South African Accreditation Authority (SAAA) accredited vendor. It is mandated to use advanced electronic signatures in some regions and regulated industries like finance, banking, and government.

Here are some benefits of signing your documents with an AES:

  • Advanced certificates that authenticate signer identity
  • Legally equivalent to handwritten signatures
  • No possibility for forgery or tampering
