Document Settings

Control your document behavior from a single window. You can manually set auto-format and auto-correct options for your documents. Similarly, change the default paste format, ruler, chat sound and spellcheck settings from one place for all your documents.

Change the units on the ruler

Writer allows you to manage the document preferences and customize them based on your requirements. For example, you can change units on the ruler, set automatic date format type and manually set autocorrect and formatting options for your document.

You can always switch between inches and millimeters while using the ruler without having to convert one to the other.

To change ruler unit,

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  2. Click Settings. A window will appear.
  3. In the Preferences tab, under Units you can change the ruler unit.

Define default font settings

When you create a document in Writer, the default font style, line spacing and background color to the document will be applied automatically. You can change any of these settings for all of your documents anytime using the Set as Default option. This will set the font settings for all future documents. Once you do this, every time you create a new document, these settings will be applied by default.

To define default formatting,

  1. Click More>Format tab.
  2. Select your preferred settings for font.
  3. In the Format tab, under Font , click Default. A small window will appear displaying the settings you have selected. To apply these settings to all documents you create, check the box labeled Set as default for all new documents .
  4. Click OK.

Once you have set auto-formatting preferences, it will help you work faster as you don't have to go back and correct minor mistakes or slips.

To set auto-formatting preferences,

  1. Click the Settings icon.
  2. Click Settings from the drop-down menu. A window will appear.
  3. Check/uncheck the auto-format options listed in the Preferences tab.
  4. Click Save.

Set default paste format

If you select and set a default paste format, you need not go and change it every time a piece of content is pasted.

To set default paste format,

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  2. Click Settings. A window will appear.
  3. In the Preferences tab, select the paste format you want under Paste.
  4. Click Save.

Set auto-correct options

Auto-correction mostly helps when you want to replace a common misspelling with the correct spelling every time you type it. However, you can also use this feature for replacing input entries with symbols which you cannot type from the keyboard. Auto-correction in Writer is of two types: Custom and Default.

To set auto-correct options,

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Go to the Auto correct tab. You will see two sections: Custom and Default.
  4. Add auto-correct entries under Custom by entering the misspelled word in the Replace field and the correct spelling in the With field. Click the Enter icon to the right of the text box.
  5. Turn on/off default auto-correction entries by checking/unchecking the boxes next to each default entry.

Note : To disable auto-correction completely, check the box labeled Disable Auto Correct at the bottom of this tab.

Set autocorrect options

Enable/disable chat sounds

You can select from a list of chat sounds and change it any time you want. You can also disable it if you find it distracting.

To enable/disable chat sound,

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  2. Click Settings. A window will appear.
  3. Open the Sound Alert tab.
  4. Make your selection and click Save.

Change default spell check settings

You can change default spell check settings and control the way the spell check tool behaves. You can also change the language.

To change default spell check settings,

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  2. Click Settings. A window will appear.
  3. Open the Spell Check tab.
  4. Select the proofing language and set other preferences.
  5. Click Save.

Turn off Visual Cues

You can turn-off the Visual Cues if you think they distract your writing process.

To turn off the visual cues,

  1. Click the Settings icon.
  2. Choose Settings again from the drop down. A pop-up window will open.
  3. Under UI Preferences, uncheck Show visual cues near current line and then click Save to remove Visual Cues.

Change the Display Language

If you want to change the language of Writer to something other than what you are already using, you can do so by going through the following steps.

To change the Display Language

  1. Click the Settings icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
  2. Choose Settings from the drop down. A pop-up window will open.
  3. Go to UI Preferences. Under Display Language you will see Change. Click on it to pick the language you desire to and click Save.
