Set page size

You can set the page size according to the type of document you want to create.

To set page size

  1. Click More > Page Setup.
  2. Under Page Setup panel, go to the Layout tab.
  3. Click Page Size under Settings.
  4. Select the page size you want.

Change page orientation

You can choose portrait orientation for documents and landscape orientation for illustrations.

To change page orientation

  1. Click the Page icon and select the orientation you want.
  2. Alternativelty, click More > Page Setup > Layout tab > Settings > Orientation.

Set margins

You can manually set the margins on the four sides of the page so that you have enough space to type.

To set margins

  1. Click More > Page Setup > Layout tab > Settings > Margins.
  2. Under Margins, you can set the width of the margins on four sides. Also, click Custom Margins to customize your page margin.

Alternatively, Margins can also be set by adjusting the horizontal and vertical rulers.

Set page columns

When columns were wider than a certain width, readers will either find it hard to keep reading or to take in what they had read. Content presented in multiple columns is easier to read and easier on the eyes. Also, from an aesthetics point of view, multi-column layouts look just as neat and pretty.

To split documents into columns,

  1. Click More > Page Setup > Layout tab.
  2. Choose from one of the predefined column break icons.
  3. Click More to define the column breaks manually.
  4. Apart from manually assigning the column breaks, you can define the width for each of the columns and the spacing between them under width and spacing. You can also insert lines between columns by enabling Lines between column under Number of columns.

Note:
If you are in the middle of a column and want the cursor to jump over to another column, use Column Breaks. To insert Column Breaks, go to Insert > Sections & Pages > Breaks > Column Breaks. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Enter.

Column Breaks

When it comes to column breaks, we all have our preferences. From the number of columns to their width to the spacing between them, we like to fiddle with them manually, once in a while, if not always.

  1. Left and Right Columns:
    By default, columns are created in equal widths. If you want to change this, click 'More' under columns and choose either the Left or the Right column. This way, one of the columns will appear wider than the other.
  2. Width and Spacing between columns:
    The default width and spacing that gets assigned to columns would suit for a better readability. That said, you can also adjust them manually by choosing 'Width and Spacing' under 'More' options in the Column settings.
  3. Lines between columns:
    Draw lines between columns if you want them to stand out distinctively. To do so, enable 'Lines between column' under 'Number of columns.'
  4. Paragraphs that span across columns:
    Generally, the text inside a column is confined to that particular column. For a block of text/image to spread out and span across columns, use Text Box. To insert a Text Box, place your cursor where you want the Text Box to be inserted and click enter. Go to Insert > Pictures and Tables > Text Box. Inside the Text Box you can either insert an eye-catching image or a captivating content.

Adding headers and footers

Headers and footers make a document attractive and professional. You can include the document name, author's name and page numbers in header or footer.

Set header/footer

To set header and footer,

  1. Click More > Insert tab.
  2. Click Header/Footer under Sections & Pages.
  3. Select the header/footer format you want. The selection will be applied to the document.

Set the distance of the header and footer from the edges

You can manually set the distance of the header and footer from the edge of the page and make the edges as visible as you want.

To set the distance from the edges,

  1. Double click on the header or footer area and click Header Options.
  2. Under Distance from Edge, you will be able to increase and decrease the distance between header/footer and edges.

To set distance of header/footer using vertical ruler,

  1. Double click on the header or footer area.
  2. Adjust distance using top or bottom margins on the vertical ruler.
  3. Click Exit.

Edit/Delete headers and footers

To edit/delete headers and footers,

  1. Double-click the header or footer area.
  2. Select the header or footer area and make the changes using the Header options. You can add an image, page number, author name, change font and color of your header and footer.
  3. Just hit the delete button from your device, if you want to delete the header/footers.

To edit/delete the header/footer on the first page,

  1. Double-click the header or footer area to open the Header Options.
  2. Click the check box Different First Page under Options.
  3. Now edit/delete the header/footer from the first page alone. The changes you made to the header/footer will be reflected in the first page only.

To edit/delete the header/footer in the alternative pages,

  1. Double-click the header or footer area to open the Header Options.
  2. Click the check box Different Even & Odd Pages under Options.
  3. Now make changes to your Header/footer. The changes you made to the header/footer will be reflected in the alternative pages only.

Page breaks and controlling pagination

Insert page break

If you want to end a topic in a page and start the next one in the following page, use a page break.

To insert page break,

  • Click where you want to insert the page break.
  • Click the Moreicon > Insert tab.
  • Click Page Break under Sections & Pages. A page break will be inserted.

Insert blank page

If you need to fit in a page of content between two pages, which are already done, you can use the insert blank page option.

To insert blank page,

  • Click where you want to insert the blank page.
  • Click the Moreicon > Insert tab.
  • Click Blank Page under Sections & Pages. A blank page will be inserted.

Delete blank page

To delete blank page,

Select the blank page in your document and hit backspace/delete button from your keyboard. Make sure that there are no spaces on the page.

Note: If your blank page exists somewhere in the middle of the document, it may be due to manual page break. With paragraph marks turned on, you will be able to see the page break. Select and delete it to remove the blank page.
