VAT in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, Value Added Tax (VAT) is levied by the HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) on the goods or services provided by registered businesses. If your business has or is expected to have a taxable turnover of more than £90,000 in the next 30 days, it is mandatory for you to register for VAT.

Insight: HMRC or His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is the UK government department responsible for collecting taxes, administering benefits and credits, managing customs and border duties, and enforcing tax and financial laws. Formed in 2005 through the merger of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise, HMRC oversees income tax, VAT, corporation tax, National Insurance, and other key revenue streams, while also working to prevent tax evasion and ensure the smooth functioning of the UK’s tax system.
