This question type has the following different variations that you can use in your survey.

Matrix Choice (One Answer)

This question type appears like a grid with multiple items having the same answer choices. The respondents can only select a single answer for each item.

How do I add a matrix choice (one answer) question in my survey?

  1. Click Matrix Choice (One Answer) in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected. For example, if you selected a matrix choice question type, you can only change it to its variants available in the list. You can select an option from the dropdown.

  2. In the Question box, type your question.
    • If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox.
    • If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the text box.
    • If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click the arrow next to Insert Variable right above the Question box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping.
  3. In the Answer box, you can add the answer choices in the following ways:
    • If you are copying and pasting the choices in the Row label and Column label answer boxes, make sure you type in each choice on a separate line.

    • If you want to add choices separately, click Individual Text Boxes for Each Choice right above the Answer box, and start adding choices. Click + to add more boxes, and click X to delete choices.

  4. To know what more you can do with the question, click Advanced options. You can perform the following actions:
    • In the Required number of rows dropdown list, select the number of rows you want to keep as mandatory. This option appears only if the Make this question mandatory checkbox is selected.
    • Force Ranking (One response per column) - The force ranking option restricts the respondent from choosing the same ranking for more than one variable.
    • To add a comments box, select Add 'Comments' field. If you want to change the name of the field, in the Comments field label box, type in the new field name.
    • Question hint is used to add hints to your question and help your respondents get a clear idea on what your questions are all about. This feature is optional and is available only for certain types of questions.

  5. Click Save.
  6. To discard the changes, click Cancel.

 

Matrix Choice (Many Answers)

How do I add a matrix choice (many answers) question in my survey?

  1. Click Matrix Choice (Many Answers) in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. If you want the respondents to answer all rows in the matrix, then select All. This option appears only if the Make this question mandatory checkbox is selected.

    • In addition to the number of rows you selected, In the Required number of columns per row dropdown list, select the number (of columns) to keep as mandatory for the respondent to pick. At least one column must be selected. The number of columns required should be lesser than the total number of columns. These two options appear only if the Answer mandatory for this question checkbox is selected.
    • To add a comments box, select Add 'Comments' field. If you want to change the name of the field, in the Comments field label box, type in the new field name.
    • Question hint is used to add hints to your question and help your respondents get a clear idea on what your questions are all about. This feature is optional and is available only for certain types of questions.

  1. Click Save.
  2. To discard the changes, click Cancel.

 

Matrix Rating Scale

This question type allows the respondent to rate multiple items in a single question.

There are two types of rating scales:

  • Likert Scale - The likert scale allows the respondent to give a rating on a scale from 0 to 10. It is ideal for questions that require a scale that shows two extreme ranges. 
  • Weighted Choice - The weighted choice allows the respondent to select single ratings for each of your answer choices. Each choice will have a label with a rating weightage assigned to it. This is also ideal for questions that require a scale that shows two extreme ranges.

 

How do I add a matrix rating scale question in my survey?

  1. Click Matrix Rating Scale in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder. Also, you can change the question type by clicking the dropdown next to the question type in the question editor. However, the choices for change are related to the question type you have selected.   4. In the Type dropdown, select the scale you want to use. 

    If you click Likert Scale:

    • In the Scale dropdown, select the lowest and the highest ranges.
    • In the Column labels field, name the lowest and the highest ranges. This is not a mandatory field.

    If you click Weighted choice:

    • In the text boxes, type the choices you want to use. You can also insert predefined choices here. Click Predefined Choices and select the choice you want to use in the survey.

    • In the Weight boxes, assign numbers.
    • To add more choices, click +.
    • To delete a row, click X.

Matrix Star Rating

This question type allows the respondent to use stars to rate many items in a single question.

How do I add a matrix star rating question in my survey?

  1. Click Matrix Star Rating in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder.

    • If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox.
    • If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the text box.

  3. In the Answer - Row labels section, you can add the answer choices in the following ways:
    • If you are copying and pasting the choices in the Answer box, make sure you type in each choice on a separate line.

  1. In the Number of stars list, select the number of stars you want to use in your question.
  2. To learn what else you can do with the question, click Advanced options. You can perform the following actions:
    • In the Required number of rows dropdown list, select the number of rows you want to keep as mandatory. If you want the respondents to answer all rows in the matrix, then select All. This option appears only if the Make this question mandatory checkbox is selected.

Matrix Dropdown

This question type helps the respondents to analyze various items with the same set of measurements by selecting from a list of choices.

How do I add a matrix dropdown question in my survey?

  1. Click Matrix Dropdown in the question types listed on the left pane. You can also drag and drop the question type to the builder.

  2. In the Question box, type your question.
    • If you want to mark the question mandatory, select the Make this question mandatory checkbox.
    • If you want to make changes to the default Error message text that displays, edit the content in the text box.
    • If you want to pipe in custom variables or variables from previous questions and customize the follow up questions, click the arrow next to Insert Variable right above the Question box, and select the variable you want to use from the list. Read more on Piping.
  3. In the Answer section, you need to add choices in the following sections:
    • In the Row labels boxes, type in the names for the rows.

    • In the Column labels boxes, type in the names for the columns.
    • In the Column labels section, click Create online surveys to provide the dropdown choices.
    • In the box that appears, type in each dropdown choice on a separate line.

    • When you are done typing in the dropdown choices, Click Save.
    • To go back and add a few more choices, click Cancel
    • Click + to add more boxes, and click X to delete choices.

If you want the respondents to answer all rows in the matrix, then select All. This option appears only if the Make this question mandatory checkbox is selected.

    • In addition to the number of rows you selected, In the Required number of columns per row dropdown list, select the number (of columns) to keep as mandatory for the respondent to pick. At least one column must be selected. The number of columns required should be lesser than the total number of columns. These two options appear only if the Answer mandatory for this question checkbox is selected.
    • To add a comments box, select Add 'Comments' field. If you want to change the name of the field, in the Comments field label box, type in the new field name.
