What is a certificate of completion?
A certificate of completion contains information about the sender, recipients, authentication methods, and legal disclosure of a digitally signed document. Zoho Sign uses a public key infrastructure (PKI) for digital signatures. Documents signed with a digital certificate and PKI come with a certificate of completion, and they are compliant with global e-signature laws such as the ESIGN Act, eIDAS, ETA, ITA 2000, and PIPEDA.
Why do we need a certificate of completion?
A certificate of completion validates the authenticity of a signed document. These certificates are tamperproof, and they prove the signers' consent and verification in case of legal disputes.
What's covered in a certificate of completion?
The certificate is usually a two-page document that contains a summary of the signed agreement, the signer details, and the legal disclosure. The contents will vary based on your Zoho Sign subscription and account settings.
Document summary:
This includes the unique document ID, document name, signing workflow, and the sender's information. It also shows when the document was sent and when it was signed, as well the number of documents sent for signature.
Recipients:
The certificate of completion has recipient or signer details, such as their full name and email address.
Signature details:
This includes the signature, the reason for signing the document, where the document was accessed from, the device used, and the authentication type.
Signing data:
The signing data includes the date of signature and the signer's unique ID.
Legal disclosure:
The standard legal disclosures can be customized according to the sender organization's policies.
Authentication mode:
A certificate of completion also shows the authentication mode used to access the document. It could be an OTP verification via SMS or email, or signer identity verification via qualified trust service providers. This will be captured based on your subscription and account settings.
