Hawthorne effect

A psychological effect where individuals alter their behavior when they notice that they're being observed. The term originated from a series of experiments at the Hawthorne Works industrial plant in the 1920s and 30s, during which lead researcher Elton Mayo concluded that workers' productivity increased when they knew they were being watched.
