# Why can’t I auto generate bill numbers in Zoho Books?

The bills you record in Zoho Books are a means of internally tracking the payments due to your vendors. This means all the information you use to record the bill, including the **reference or bill number**, is taken from the invoices they send you and doesn’t need to be auto generated.
