# How do I assign a tax category to an item?

To assign a tax category to an item:

*   Go to **Items** on the left sidebar.
*   Click **\+ New** in the top right corner.
*   In the _New Item_ page, click the **Search** icon next to the _Tax Category_ field.
*   Search for the tax category and select it from the dropdown.
*   Enter the other required fields, and click **Save**.

The GST rate gets auto-filled based on the selected tax category when you add the item in a transaction.
