# How do I assign a tax category for an item?

To assign a tax category for an item:

*   Go to _Items_ on the left sidebar, and select **Items**.
*   Click **\+ New** in the top right corner.
*   In the _New Item_ page, click the **Search** icon on the right of the _Tax Category_ field.
*   Search for the tax category and select it from the dropdown.
*   Complete the other required fields, and click **Save**.

The GST rate fills in automatically based on the selected tax category when you add the item in a transaction.
