# How are taxes applied to items?

Taxes apply automatically based on the item’s tax category and the customer’s Country/Region in the Billing Address. When you add an item with a tax category to a transaction, the correct tax rate applies based on the customer’s location. Learn [how to create an item](/en-sg/books/help/items/#create-item).
