Understanding Packages

This page provides an overview of how Packages module work in Zoho ERP. It walks through the purpose of packages, their key benefits, and how they fit into the order fulfilment process to ensure accurate packing and smooth shipping.

What is a Package?

Package is a transaction that records how items from a confirmed sales order are packed into one or more boxes before shipment. Each package records the items packed and their quantities, and packing details such as the package slip number, that provides a clear reference for tracking and fulfilment.

Packages module help organisations track what is packed and how it moves through the fulfilment process from packing to shipment and delivery.

Scenario: Patricia Boyle runs a home appliances distribution business. While preparing a confirmed order of electric kettles, mixer grinders, and toasters, her warehouse team needs to ensure that each box contains the correct items and quantities before dispatch.

Patricia uses the packages module in Zoho ERP, checks the package records where each box has its own package slip showing the items packed inside along with their quantities. This helps her quickly confirm that the order has been packed correctly and gives the team a clear reference before the goods move to the shipment stage.

Key Benefits of Using Packages

  • To ensure whether the correct items and quantities are packed for shipment.
  • To reduce packing and dispatch errors in warehouse operations.
  • Supports serial, batch, and bin level tracking during packing.
  • Provides clear visibility for fulfilment, delivery, and audits.

Package Geometry — Smart Packing Support

Packages also support Package Geometry, an AI-powered feature that helps you simulate how items fit inside boxes before packing. By using item dimensions like height, weight, length and box capacities, it visualises item placement to optimize space usage, reduce unnecessary boxes, and ensure safe packing.

This helps fulfilment teams pack more efficiently, avoid trial-and-error, and create accurate package slips for each box.

Lifecycle of a Package

The lifecycle of a package represents the stages it goes through during order fulfilment. A package is created once a sales order is confirmed, remains Not Shipped while packing is completed, moves to Shipped when a shipment is created, and finally reaches Delivered when the goods reach the customer.

Packages act as an operational fulfilment record that bridges sales orders and shipments, ensuring inventory and logistics remain accurate and traceable.
