# Is stock tracked automatically, or do I need to enable it?

Stock is not tracked by default; you need to enable it per item. To enable it, open or edit an item and check **Track Inventory for this item**. Once enabled, the items will be tracked automatically, and the stock will be updated whenever a sale is made.

You can also add opening stock from the _Item Details_ page by clicking the settings icon under the _Locations_ section.
