# How does Digital Downloads work?

Digital download items let you sell and deliver digital files, such as eBooks, course guides, or practice papers, to customers immediately after payment, with no shipping involved. To add a digital download item:

1.  Go to **Items** and click **New Item**.
2.  In the **General Details** section, enter the **Title** and other details for the item.
3.  Under **Item Details**, check **Contains Digital Downloads**. Once enabled, you can upload the file on the item details page.
4.  Enter the **Selling Price** and fill in any other required details.
5.  Click **Save**.

After a customer completes payment, they get access to the downloadable file automatically.

You can also configure download settings for each digital file under **Associated Digital Downloads** on the item details page. Click the edit icon next to the _Link Expires After_ to set:

*   **Download Count** - The number of times the customer can download the file.
*   **Link Expires After** - The number of days before the download link becomes inactive.
*   **Send Digital Downloads** - Choose **Manual**, **After Payment**, or **After Fulfilment** to send the files after the order is placed.

When set to **Manual**, go to the **Orders** module once the order is placed and send the digital file from there.
