How do I mention users(@) and tag channels(#)

@mentions and #tags are used to notify users of important messages. @mentions are to convey the message to users of the same channel, whereas #tags are for conveying the message to members of another channel. @mentions and #tags function according to channel levels as explained in detail below.

Mentions and HashtagsPurposeCan be restricted under Permissions
@usernameTo tag a user ✔︎
@participantsTo tag all users of a channel✔︎
@availableTo tag users whose status is web/mobile available at the moment✔︎
#channelnameTo tag a channel B from channel A

#tag:

  • In a team channel when # is typed, all the channels under that particular team will be displayed for you to select, regardless of whether you are part of those channels or not.
  • In a muliteam channel when # is typed, all the channels under the particular teams that you belong to will be listed for selection, even if you are not part of them.
  • In an organization channel when # is typed, all the organization channels will be displayed to choose from, even if you are not part of them.
  • #tags are not applicable in closed channels of organization and team, as well as in personal and external channels.
  • All participants of the #tagged channel will be able to see an info message posted in the channel with details of the user who hashtagged.

@mentions:

  • In any channel (i.e. Organization, Team, Multiteam, Closed Organization, Closed Team, Personal, and External) if a channel participant is @mentioned, then that user will receive notifications.
  • In an organization channel apart from the channel participants if any other user in the organization is mentioned, then those users will also receive notifications as organization channels are open to everyone.
  • In a team channel and multiteam channel apart from the channel participants if any other team member is mentioned, then those members will also receive notifications as team and multiteam channels are open to all team members.
  • Apart from the above 3 conditions, no other users will receive notifications for @mentions in channels. These users can be mentioned for reference.

Notifications when @mentioned:

  • Users will be notified via @mentions tab in top header for @mentions. The mentions tab will display number counts when the user receives a notification. (refer above image for number count on @mentions tab)
  • An email will be rolled out if the @mentions are not viewed by the user within 15 mins, provided the user had enabled email notifications for @mentions under Settings.
  • In the email received the user can see the mention and can also choose to view it in Cliq which will open that channel in a new tab.
  • If the user is part of the channel then they can reply directly to the mentioned message, but if the user is not part of that channel and got notified, then the user must join the channel to reply to that mentioned message.
