Message Headers

Email headers provide the basic information which is unique to each email message.  It has the detailed information such as

  • Source of an email (From address)
  • IP address/Server from which the email was sent
  • Detailed footprint path through which the email was transmitted
  • Message content

In this section, you’ll learn on how to locate the header information for different webmail and desktop email clients.

  Webmail Service Providers

  Gmail

  1. Log in to Gmail account.
  2. Open the message in your Gmail inbox.
  3. Click the down-arrow in the top-right corner of the message pane.
  4. Click the Show original link toward the bottom of the options box. The full message headers will appear in separate window.

  Yahoo! Mail

  1. Log in to Yahoo! Mail.
  2. Open the message.
  3. Click More >> Full Headers at the top of your message pane.
  4. The full headers will appear above the message text.

  Hotmail

  1. Log into MSN Hotmail.
  2. Click into your Inbox.
  3. Hover (DO NOT CLICK) over the email for which you want to see the headers.
  4. Right click to get a new menu of options.
  5. Choose the View message source option.
  6. Now, the full headers for the email you were hovering on will be displayed.

  AOL

  1. Log in to AOL Mail.
  2. Open the message.
  3. Click Action >> View message Source at the top of your message pane.
  4. The full headers will appear above the message text.

  Excite Webmail

  1. Log in to your Excite account.
  2. Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
  3. Click the View Full Headers icon located on the right of the From: line.
  4. The full headers for all of your messages will appear in a new window.

  Office 365

  1. Log in to your Office 365 account.
  2. Select the e-mail you wish to get message details from.
  3. Click “...” to the right of FORWARD.
  4. Select View message details.
  5. The header details will appear in a pop up window.

  Zoho Mail

  1. Log in to mail.zoho.com
  2. Open the email, for which you want to get the headers.
  3. Click the Show Original icon in the right corner.
  4. The header details will open in a new window.
  5. Click Show full message to view the entire source of the email.
  6. You can copy the entire stuff and place them in a text file, to send it to others.

  Desktop Email Clients

  Apple Mail

  1. Open AppleMail.
  2. Double-click to open the email message.
  3. Choose View at the top menu and select Customize Toolbars.

  4. Drag the Full Headers or Long Headers icon into your toolbar and save changes.

  5. Now, you can click on Full Headers or Long Headers to the top of the toolbar.

  Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Double-click to open the email message.
  3. From the menu bar, select View > Headers then choose All.
  4. The headers should be immediately displayed.

  Outlook 2010

  1. Open Outlook 2010.
  2. Select the email message for which you'd like to view the headers.
  3. Click on File >> Properties.
  4. The new window contains the headers. 

  Outlook 2007

  1. Open Outlook2007.
  2. Open the email message.
  3. Under the Message tab, in the Options group, click on the Dialog Box Launcher icon.

  4. In the Message Options dialog box, the headers appear in the Internet headers box.

  Outlook 2003, 2002, 2000

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Double-click to open the email message in a new window.
  3. Select View > Options from the message's menu.
  4. All header lines appear under Internet Headers at the bottom of the dialog box.

  Outlook Express

  1. Open OutlookExpress.
  2. Right click on the message and select Properties.
  3. Choose the Details tab and select the MessageSource button.
