# What Features Are Supported for Subscriptions for Items?

Subscriptions for items support a range of billing and lifecycle management features. Unlike plan-based subscriptions, they bill per item quantity and frequency rather than against a fixed plan cycle. Use this reference to understand which features are available and why certain plan-based features do not apply.

**Scenario:** Patricia Boyle, Finance Manager at Zylker, manages recurring orders for a set of physical goods. Using subscriptions for items in Zoho Billing, she can pause, resume, and apply credit notes — without needing a plan-based pricing structure.

## Unsupported Features

The following features are available in plan-based subscriptions but are not supported for subscriptions for items.

Pause Credits

Pause credits apply to plan-based pricing tiers. Subscriptions for items do not use plans, so there is no credit period to track against a plan cycle.

Prorated Billing

Proration requires a structured plan with a fixed price per billing period. Subscriptions for items bill per item quantity and frequency, so mid-cycle adjustments are not prorated.

Prevent Automatic Cancellations

This setting applies to plan expiry logic, which does not exist in subscriptions for items.

Metered Billing

Metered billing tracks usage dynamically within a plan. Subscriptions for items bill a fixed quantity at a set frequency.

Usage Billing (including Prepaid)

Usage and prepaid billing require a plan structure to define usage pools and allowances.

Automatic Refunds

Automatic refunds are tied to plan cancellation credits. Subscriptions for items do not accrue plan credits, so automatic refunds do not apply.

Manual Renewal

Subscriptions for items renew automatically on the billing schedule you set. Manual renewal is not available.

Advance Billing

Advance billing is supported only for plan-based subscriptions, where future billing periods can be invoiced ahead of time.
