GMROI

What is
GMROI, or gross margin return on investment, measures how efficiently the money sitting in your inventory turns into gross profit. Unlike inventory turnover, which only tracks how fast stock moves, GMROI tells you whether that movement is actually profitable, making it one of the sharper retail metrics for deciding what to stock, discount, or discontinue.
What you need to know about GMROI?
A GMROI of 2.5–3 is generally considered healthy. A GMROI below 1 usually signals overstocking or weak margins.
GMROI can be calculated at any level, from a single SKU to an entire store, for both daily and quarterly decisions.
A low GMROI doesn't always mean a product should be dropped, as some categories run lower on purpose to drive traffic.
How to calculate GMROI?
Gross margin is simply your net sales minus your cost of goods sold (COGS). Average inventory cost is the mean of your opening and closing stock value for the period, valued at cost, not at retail price. Calculate your average inventory using this calculator.
Why is calculating GMROI important?
Smarter buying decisions
Knowing which products generate the most gross profit relative to what you've invested in them helps you buy more of what works and cut back on what's cutting into your margins.
Category-level profitability
GMROI lets you compare categories on equal footing. A high-volume, low-margin category and a low-volume, high-margin one can both look successful until you measure the return on the inventory investment behind them.
Healthier cash flow
Inventory is cash sitting on a shelf. A rising GMROI means that cash is converting into profit faster, freeing up working capital for reordering, new lines, or simply borrowing less to stay stocked.
