To control permissions
You can associate the profile with the users so that they can access CRM modules and fields that are assigned to them. Users with System Administrator privileges can associate a profile with users.
To associate users with a profile
When organizing your Zoho CRM account, you may delete some of the unwanted profiles after assigning the users to the other profiles. Before deleting a particular profile, Users associated to that profile must be transferred to other existing profiles. You can delete all the profiles except "System Administrator" and "Standard User" profiles.

What will be the roles and profiles of the users that I import?
By default, the users that you import will have the following:
Role - Manager
Profile - Standard
After importing, you can change the roles and profiles from the Users page.
In Zoho CRM, Role defines a position of user(s) within the organizational-wide hierarchy. It can be used to provide or restrict access to the CRM data. Whereas Profile defines the set of permissions to access the features in the Zoho CRM.
For users with Standard profiles, you can change only the module-level permissions. Other permissions like import, export, tool permissions, etc. cannot be changed for the default profile (Standard profile). However, you can change the permissions for the custom profiles that you create.
